"Live and let live."

In latest interview, Pope Francis reveals top 10 secrets to happiness

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Slowing down, being generous and fighting for peace are part of Pope Francis' secret recipe for happiness.

In an interview published in part in the Argentine weekly "Viva" July 27, the pope listed his Top 10 tips for bringing greater joy to one's life:

1. "Live and let live." Everyone should be guided by this principle, he said, which has a similar expression in Rome with the saying, "Move forward and let others do the same."

2. "Be giving of yourself to others." People need to be open and generous toward others, he said, because "if you withdraw into yourself, you run the risk of becoming egocentric. And stagnant water becomes putrid."

3. "Proceed calmly" in life. The pope, who used to teach high school literature, used an image from an Argentine novel by Ricardo Guiraldes, in which the protagonist -- gaucho Don Segundo Sombra -- looks back on how he lived his life.

"He says that in his youth he was a stream full of rocks that he carried with him; as an adult, a rushing river; and in old age, he was still moving, but slowly, like a pool" of water, the pope said. He said he likes this latter image of a pool of water -- to have "the ability to move with kindness and humility, a calmness in life."

4. "A healthy sense of leisure." The pleasures of art, literature and playing together with children have been lost, he said.

"Consumerism has brought us anxiety" and stress, causing people to lose a "healthy culture of leisure." Their time is "swallowed up" so people can't share it with anyone.

Even though many parents work long hours, they must set aside time to play with their children; work schedules make it "complicated, but you must do it," he said.

Families must also turn off the TV when they sit down to eat because, even though television is useful for keeping up with the news, having it on during mealtime "doesn't let you communicate" with each other, the pope said.

5. Sundays should be holidays. Workers should have Sundays off because "Sunday is for family," he said.

6. Find innovative ways to create dignified jobs for young people. "We need to be creative with young people. If they have no opportunities they will get into drugs" and be more vulnerable to suicide, he said.

"It's not enough to give them food," he said. "Dignity is given to you when you can bring food home" from one's own labor.

7. Respect and take care of nature. Environmental degradation "is one of the biggest challenges we have," he said. "I think a question that we're not asking ourselves is: 'Isn't humanity committing suicide with this indiscriminate and tyrannical use of nature?'"

8. Stop being negative. "Needing to talk badly about others indicates low self-esteem. That means, 'I feel so low that instead of picking myself up I have to cut others down,'" the pope said. "Letting go of negative things quickly is healthy."

9. Don't proselytize; respect others' beliefs. "We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: 'I am talking with you in order to persuade you,' No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing," the pope said.

10. Work for peace. "We are living in a time of many wars," he said, and "the call for peace must be shouted. Peace sometimes gives the impression of being quiet, but it is never quiet, peace is always proactive" and dynamic.

Pope Francis also talked about the importance of helping immigrants, praising Sweden's generosity in opening its doors to so many people, while noting anti-immigration policies show the rest of Europe "is afraid."

He also fondly recalled the woman who helped his mother with the housework when he was growing up in Buenos Aires.

Concepcion Maria Minuto was a Sicilian immigrant, a widow and mother of two boys, who went three times a week to help the pope's mother do laundry, since in those days it was all done by hand.

He said this hard-working, dignified woman made a big impression on the 10-year-old future pope, as she would talk to him about World War II in Italy and how they farmed in Sicily.

"She was as clever as a fox, she had every penny accounted for, she wouldn't be cheated. She had many great qualities," he said.

Even though his family lost touch with her when they moved, the then-Jesuit Father Jorge Bergoglio later sought her out and visited her for the last 10 years of her life.

"A few days before she died, she took this small medal out of her pocket, gave it to me and said: 'I want you to have it!' So every night, when I take it off and kiss it, and every morning when I put it back on, this woman comes to my mind."

"She died happy, with a smile on her face and with the dignity of someone who worked. For that reason I am very sympathetic toward housecleaners and domestic workers, whose rights, all of them, should be recognized" and protected, he said. "They must never be exploited or mistreated."

Pope Francis' concern was underlined in his @Pontifex Twitter feed just a few days later, July 29, with the message: "May we be always more grateful for the help of domestic workers and caregivers; theirs is a precious service."

Heartbreaking Photo Project Captures Everyday Heroes In Their Last Moments Of Life

http://rightbeforeidie.com/

"It is more important to know what sort of person has a disease than to know what sort of disease a person has."
This wisdom, originally attributed to Hippocrates who lived until 377 BC, rings true in the photography of Andrew George, whose project "Right Before I Die" is a striking meditation on life and loss. The Los Angeles-based artist captures humble yet heartbreaking portraits of everyday people in their final moments of life, forced to confront the daunting reality of death until it meets them head on.

"When the idea for this project came to me, the mother of a friend had recently passed away and at her memorial, I marveled at how there was so much genuine love for her," George explained to The Huffington Post. "I began to wonder what it was about this woman that brought that out. She had this magic in the clear and wise way she spoke and never took herself too seriously. She laughed more than anyone I knew, reacted with sincerity and interest to her friends, and had so much passion in her fearless curiosity to travel and explore different cultures of the world. She was, quite simply, one of the best people I've known, yet, regrettably, was no one you'd ever learn about if you didn’t know her because her material accomplishments did not include fame."
George became interested in those living with the knowledge of their impending deaths, those "unremarkable" people who for so long went unnoticed at bus stops, in markets, on the sidewalk. With a single diagnosis these everyday citizens become unacknowledged heroes, forced to fight with inconceivable strength as the body continues to weaken. "For all of them, it started much as it will start for you: a strangely persistent itch at the back of the head, a discomfort on the left side, a lump fingered in the shower. Something [that] became impossible to ignore," Alain de Botton explains in a foreword for the project.

To better understand this final, and often unseen, phase of life, George searched for a hospice that would allow him to spend time with its patients. Many turned him down, except Dr. Marwa Kilani at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Los Angeles. Dr. Kilani was drawn to George's project and, after looking at his previous work, began asking exceptional patients if they would be interested in meeting with him. George would spend a few hours getting to know each individual, their journey, their stories and their fears, and attempt to capture it all in a portrait. He purposefully excluded any mention of the subjects' professions or illnesses in the piece to prevent distractions.
"Watching his ability to capture color in the simplest elements of a hospital room and reflecting light onto the faces of each patient was a delicate process," Dr. Kilani said in a statement. "Finding beauty in the sterility of a hospital environment is not simple. But the challenge of the seeming monotony makes his images so powerful." Indeed George's images are as simple as they are gut-wrenching, containing within them the attributes of an individual whose defining features are already starting to give way. Some express strength or happiness while others appear less conscious or expressive, all captured in the stark lights of the hospice rooms.
George's brave and thoughtful project showcases the many courageous spirits who will never be written about in history books. Some, sadly, will barely even be acknowledged as much as they deserve. "The dying are the great appreciators," Botton writes. "They notice the value of the sunshine on a spring afternoon, a few minutes with a grandchild, another breath… And they know what spoilt ingrates we are, not stopping to register the wonder of every passing minute. They were once like us of course. They wasted decades but now they are in a position to know of their folly and warn us of our own."
As George put it, "these men and women were no different from any of us, and, sooner or later we would all be experiencing what they were." See the beautiful series below and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

2 Bible Readings I Chose for My Wedding.

Philippians Chapter 4
Always be joyful, then, in the Lord; I repeat, be joyful.
Let your good sense be obvious to everybody. The Lord is near.
Never worry about anything; but tell God all your desires of every kind in prayer and petition shot through with gratitude, and the peace of God which is beyond our understanding will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
Finally, brothers, let your minds be filled with everything that is true, everything that is honourable, everything that is upright and pure, everything that we love and admire -- with whatever is good and praiseworthy.
Keep doing everything you learnt from me and were told by me and have heard or seen me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.

Matthew Chapter 5
You are salt for the earth. But if salt loses its taste, what can make it salty again? It is good for nothing, and can only be thrown out to be trampled under people's feet.
'You are light for the world. A city built on a hill-top cannot be hidden.
No one lights a lamp to put it under a tub; they put it on the lamp-stand where it shines for everyone in the house.
In the same way your light must shine in people's sight, so that, seeing your good works, they may give praise to your Father in heaven.

Asking better questions...

A skill I thought of getting better at.
Huffington Post shares interesting articles I read. Today's one was about asking better questions in a relationship.

When did you feel loved today?
When did you feel lonely?
What did I do today that made you feel appreciated?
What did I say that made you feel unnoticed?
What can I do to help you right now?
Prolly make that one of my New Year resolution?

Time of the month prolly. A little emo.
Our helper was fired last weekend. She really wasn't the smartest, but sometimes a little empathy may go a longer way. Regardless, it was the option my mum chose for her helper at home.
Fair enough.

"All About Your Heart"

I don’t mind your odd behavior
It’s the very thing I love
If you were an ice cream flavor
You would be my favorite one

My imagination sees you
Like a painting by Van Gogh
Starry nights and bright sunflowers
Follow you where you may go

Oh, I’ve loved you from the start
In every single way
And more each passing day
You are brighter than the stars
Believe me when I say
It’s not about your scars
It’s all about your heart

You’re a butterfly held captive
Small and safe in your cocoon
Go on you can take your time
Time is said to heal all wounds

[Chorus]

Like a lock without a key
Like a mystery without a clue
There is no me if I cannot have you

[Chorus]

In jesus' name,

在車廂中,你不愁沒有音樂聽,因為總有人將耳機內的音樂開得很大;

你經常被迫做一個八卦公或八卦婆,因為總有人毫不介意地將自己的家事、公事、無聊事等,透過講電話時大大聲的傳到你耳中;

你的耳朵也隨時被迫做著好像特工進行的"抗疲勞轟炸"訓練一樣,因為總有人不理別人感受,打機、看Video時從不調低聲浪,任由那些低頻爆炸、高頻叮叮噹噹、諸如此類聲音傳於空氣中;

VLE email.

Colin Powell’s book, “It Worked for Me: in Life and Leadership.”

Here they are set out in blue bold font, right out of his book, with my own thoughts that follow:

1.             It ain’t as bad as you think.  It will look better in the morning.   My take on this is that all big decisions are worth sleeping on.   When we are tired and/or stressed, even little issues can look like huge ones.  Better to get some sleep and see how it looks in the morning.   Refreshed, you can have another go at reviewing your strategy and position and see it through your fresh and best eyes.
2.             Avoid having your ego so close to your position that when your position falls, your ego goes with it.   I believe that this applies in several ways.  Don’t have your sense of self-worth attached to a job, title or position.  Those things come and go and for that reason, they shouldn’t define you…YOU define you.   Likewise, your position on an issue may not be the one ultimately taken by folks in charge.   Being a great team member is all about stating your position authentically, ethically and passionately…even in disagreement with the greater sense of the group…and then as a member of the group, moving ahead with deep-rooted loyalty to carry out the group’s mission and vision, even if as a member you disagreed.  As General Powell said, “Loyalty is disagreeing strongly; loyalty is executing faithfully.”
3.             It can be done!   This one is simple…remove the word can’t from your operational planning language as often as possible.   Know that a positive mental attitude and mindset can take you to heights you never believed you would achieve.   Remember the words of Henry Ford, “whether you think you can or you think you can’t, either way you are right!”
4.             Be careful what you choose.   Don’t rush into decisions…measured thought and cooler heads often carry the day.  Know that whatever you choose and work to achieve, you may well ‘receive’ so whenever possible, be very careful to choose wisely, thoughtfully and calmly.   Make sure those choices align with your core values and authentic beliefs.
5.             Don’t let adverse facts stand in the way of a good decision. I believe that sometimes you can look at all the facts and see several courses of action, each of which may have some clear detractors…some adverse risk!   In those moments you often need to fall back to core mission, vision and values…then go with your gut.  Remember, you are better to have failed doing the right thing than to have succeeded in doing the wrong thing!
6.             You can’t make someone else’s choices.  I love this one!   This is all about me being the boss of me.   It’s about knowing our responsibilities and then being responsible for the outcome of our efforts.  Each of us can only make choices for ourselves.  We can’t make choices for others.  We can’t make other people be happy.  They are the boss of them, we are the boss of us.   Simple to comprehend, but difficult to live with, especially in a challenging world.
7.             Check the small things.  Little things can become BIG THINGS...and they often do, seemingly when it’s least convenient in our busy lives.  Focus on the big things but understand that little things are worthy of your attention too…get the big things right first, and the little things become fewer in number and more easily managed.  At some point we have to follow the suggestion of  Dr. Richard Carlson and choose not to “sweat the small stuff.”
8.             Share credit.   Teamwork is about WE doing something, not ME or I doing it.  Remember that nobody accomplishes anything alone. We all had teachers.  My surgery career is a direct (and I hope positive) reflection of the investments of Drs. Barrie Grant, Frank Nichols, Pam Wagner and a host of others including the subsequent 70 interns and residents I “trained” who taught me so much about surgery as an art, about horses, medicine and patient care.  When I am the surgeon, standing at the operative table, it’s a thought that crosses my mind frequently.  It’s also true that I am not standing there alone in any given moment….there are incredible technicians, students and colleagues present or nearby with me and working together we make great things happen.
9.             Remain Calm, be kind.  Always remain calm…losing control only exacerbates an already difficult situation.   Self management is such a key skill of the emotionally intelligent leader.  Yelling rarely, if ever, makes a tough situation any better.  Remaining calm shows respect to your teammates and coworkers and deepens your relationship with them.  It creates and enhances safety within the team.  The performances of everyone around you will improve and many times, disasters can be averted because panic and an emotional meltdown was avoided!
10.               Have a vision.  Know where you are going!  Covey tells us to “begin with the end in mind”…Twain warned us that “if we don’t know where we are going, any path will do.”  WONDERFUL ADVICE to be sure and General Powell agrees.  Knowing where you are going (AND WHY) gives you the energy, persistence, force and drive to accomplish anything you can envision.   Without a vision, you will find yourself less effective, dynamic and influential in creating positive change.
11.               Don’t take the counsel of your fears and naysayers.   Fear comes from within…it is normal, and because it’s normal, we should learn to  be ok with it when it comes to the forefront of our thoughts.   Fear serves the good purpose of keeping us safe.  Unfortunately, it can also be so effective as to hold us back from pursuing well conceived bold action for the collective, self or organizational good.   The military trains its personnel to acknowledge fear so they can work in spite of it.   We can do that as well.  Above all else recall that fear is simply focused energy that alters reality.
12.               Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier.   Again we are back to Henry Ford’s quote about mindset and whether you think you can or you think you can’t, either way you are right.  When we look for the good, we will see it.  When we look for ability we can find it.  When we look for possibility, we can live into it.   If we believe in ourselves our carefully examined motives and personal values and we live those out with conviction, persistence, fidelity and passion, we become a nearly unstoppable force for progress.   Know it, believe it, live it!

You can find many other individuals who have rules for leadership.  The good Lord knows, there are so very many books, blogs, dissertations and treatises written on the subject.   What you will begin to notice is that over time, generations, cultures, genders and at many places in history, the basics of leadership remain the basics.   I guess that’s because as we have said many times: Personal leadership is simple (to understand), it’s just not easy (to do every day, day in and day out).   For that reason, fewer people do it than would be ideal for any society or culture.

So … you recall the saying… “if it’s to be, it’s up to me”…and it is…to me, to you, and to those you influence through your positive examples of value centered servant leadership.

Enjoy your week, and give some thought to the leadership lessons above and the quotes that follow.   Above all else, make it, a great week!
